![]() ![]() This won't be the case for the bzrestore functionality, you can restore 500 TBytes or a Petabyte in one restore if you like. So we artificially constrain it to 500 GByte ZIP files, to reduce support complaints. The artificial limit of 500 GBytes for a ZIP restore isn't about technology, it is because customers got so frustrated downloading 1 TByte of data, then not being able to get at it and extract it because it requires 2 TBytes of spare disk space total, which less than 5% of customers have available, especially the non-technical customers. This eliminates the (very horrible) problem that the ZIP files introduce which is that to download and unpack a 500 GByte ZIP restore requires 1 TByte of free space. Since the files themselves might be stored on 100 different vaults, this has an absolutely spooky potential for making what took 24 hours on a ZIP restore or USB restore take 1 hour or less - if the customer has a fast enough local SSD and a fast enough network to accept 10 or 20 Gbits/sec of restore firehose being sent to it.Īlong the way, because it doesn't require the building of a monolithic ZIP file, or a monolithic USB drive before being shipped, it can simply download 10 or 100 or 200 files in parallel, place them where-ever the customer asks, then move on to the next 10 or 100 or 200 files in parallel (all prepared by different API servers). So the new bzrestore client will ask 30 or 50 or even 100 what we call "API servers" (all running the fastest SSDs sold on the market today) which are load balanced to fetch files from the slow vaults in parallel. The flaw in this design is that one restore server might be slow, or not have SSDs in it, or might have too many restores being prepared already. One issue of current restores is they are assigned to exactly one "restore server" which is a dedicated role of server at Backblaze. We're not going to use ZIP at all, so we're finally free to do anything we want and it will always work.īased on everything we have learned in the last 15 years, it also will use a pretty massive array of servers to prepare the restore in parallel. It frees Backblaze from dealing with customers that installed a crappy unzip program 5 years ago and didn't realize Windows and Mac have far superior unzip programs built in that are way more compatible than the 3rd party app. It gives us the freedom to do what the ZIP file format was limiting us from not doing, like setting the "Creation Date" separate from the "Last Modified" date (zip literally has no ability to do that). You choose the files to restore AND THE DESTINATION. All solved, and possibly faster than any previous method even beating out the USB restore drives.ĭownloads the encrypted files and decrypts them on the fly and that’s the end of it? The USB restore hard drives are too expensive for people in other countries who have to pay import duties, etc, etc. Totally unrelated the ZIP file format requires twice the space to unpack - that's completely solved by the new restore flow. The ZIP file format is too limited, it "loses" some information. But my expectations is it solves like 4 independent problems and provides a foundation going forward. I'm sure there will be hiccups but we're not taking away any of the existing mechanisms to restore so the WORST CASE scenario is it doesn't work flawlessly for customers and they lose nothing. I am sorry it took so long, but at the same time I'm really excited about it. It's well under way, and we plan to call it 9.0 - the 8.5 release number was chosen to allow 9.0 to be a bigger deal. “I like and can recommend Backblaze.Restore from within the backup app is like all we want "I've used other online backups, Backblaze is my favorite." - Marco Arment, InstaPaper "You will sleep so much better knowing you have Backblaze." - John Gruber, DaringFireball Restore & Access Files From The Web, iPhone, or a Flash/Hard Drive Sent via FedEx. ![]() Automatic & Continuous Backup of All Data and External Hard Drives.Unlimited Online Data Backup for Mac or PC.With over 5 billion files backed up and counting, you know you're getting a secure system trusted by millions to keep your most important information safe.
