Unpacking is a premium title that is today available on PC only via the Steam marketplace. Unpacking features an attractive visual design, simple user interface, and soundtrack by BAFTA award-winning composer and audio director Jeff van Dyck. The story is not told with narrative elements, but just with personal items, many of which are left behind and only a few following our main character from youth to an older age. The game requires players only to do drag & drop moves and arrange all generated items (they can’t see what they are pulling out of the box beforehand) in an apartment that already has major furniture in place.Īs the player moves from one home to another, the background story starts showing up, providing the player with an expertly crafted tale of one person growing up as a child, moving away from home to school, buying a new apartment, forming a family in a bigger home, and more. The core gameplay of Unpacking revolves around the Zen experience of pulling possessions out of boxes and fitting them into a new living environment. The game has also received numerous awards and nominations from judging bodies such as DICE, Game Developer Choice Awards, AGDA, and many others. The game has a calming character, so there is no point system, time limits or any other elements exerting pressure on us. By looking at the items that go with the heroine to successive homes, we can learn more about her and guess what kind of experiences she brings with her. By placing books on shelves, hiding cutlery in drawers, and decorating selected pieces of equipment with various accessories (for example, by attaching magnets to refrigerators), we discover various nooks and crannies of the interior. During the game our task is to take out various items from cardboard boxes and place them as we like. In Unpacking we observe the action in isometric view. Admittedly, we don't have the opportunity to meet the protagonist directly, but thanks to the items she takes with her, with time we learn more and more about her. In Unpacking we take part in eight moves of the mysterious main character. The title was developed by the independent studio Witch Beam, and its release was handled by Humble Games. Unpacking is an uncomplicated production that escapes genre classification.
